Artifax Books

If you trace your family back to the Highlands of Scotland, here is a fine historical display item and conversation piece, suitable for framing. If your name, or that of an ancestor, appears in the list below, you can have an authentic century-old print of your tartan. Our supply is limited to one print for each name.

These prints date from 1886, and were taken from the rare English book by Grant, Tartans of the Clans of Scotland (Edinburgh: Johnston, 1886, first edition). Each is based on a specimen of the actual cloth, and may be relied on as an accurate representation of the tartan. (A "tartan" is a textile pattern commonly called Scotch plaid. The picture at the top of this page shows the use of the pattern in the costume of a Highlander. For a larger image of the picture, click here.) The overall print size is 10-1/2 x 14-1/2 inches; the image size is about 7 x 10 inches.
In addition to the print of the tartan (sample shown at right), I include the page (or pages) giving the history of the clan and illustrating in full color the coat of arms of the Chief of the Clan (sample below).
In all cases the tartan page is printed on one side only. Most history pages are a single page, printed one side only; where it is more than one page it is printed both sides.
Condition: These are over 100 years old, so as expected there is some darkening at the margins of the history page (the tartan page is a coated stock so does not show this aging). Also, because they were originally bound together, the right side of the tartan print will be ragged (see sample photo), but when matted and framed this will not be noticeable. No additional concerns unless noted below.

The price for each tartan print, with history and arms page, is $34.95 (unless otherwise priced on the list), plus $3.50 first class s/h. Your print will be shipped gently rolled in a large diameter, heavy duty mailing tube.

Since there is only one of each tartan available, they are subject to prior sale. E-mail me before ordering to check availability. Payment by check, money order or by credit card through paypal.com.I will gladly answer any questions so don't hesitate to ask. * The chiefs of some clans wore separate tartans from their men, which accounts for there being two tartans for some names.

Not only Scotsmen have tartans -- the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has one, too!
